W. Bro. Jim MacKinnon P.M. Hon. Assistant Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Scotland 1916 - 2005 |
He returned to the UK and after the war resumed his studies. A good friend, who was a Professor of Dentistry pointed out to him the general shortage of dentists, whereby Jim decided upon a career change. He went on to qualify not only as a dentist, but as a Dental Surgeon. He later began practising in the Leeds area in the National Health Service and also set up his own private practice. He became involved with the Emergency Services, performing his skills at major road traffic accidents. He was a lover of fine cars. One year he enjoyed a holiday in Brittany in a luxurious Austin Sheerline drophead coupe. In 1950 he was a co-entrant in the RAC Rally. As Navigator he and his driver achieved 7th place in the final standings and went on to win the Concorde at Brighton. Rallying became a passion, something which he passed on to his son. In due course, he became the proud father of two daughters, Diana and Caroline and a son, Ronald. He joined freemasonry in 1948, in St Wilfred's Lodge in Leeds. |
He went through the chair of his mother lodge in 1958. He became an eminent freemason, advancing to many of the different Orders, including Royal Arch Chapter, Mark Lodge, Knights Templar, Knights Templar Priest, Royal Order of Scotland, the Cryptic Council, the Ark Mariner, Rosicrucian Society, Knights of Constantine, the 18th and 30th degrees. He progressed through many of the chairs of these fine Orders. He was appointed as Provincial Grand Junior Warden in the province of Yorkshire. Masonry was his major hobby and was in his heart. However, family always came first, a philosophy which he made a point of carrying through. Other hobbies included philately and gardening, the latter, the result of which can easily be seen at his home in Uig. He spent a lot of time caring for his mother in her later years and who passed away in the early 1960s. In 1969 he was invited to become a Justice of the Peace in Leeds, a position eligible only to people of extremely good standing within the community. Thus, throughout the years, he enjoyed a prominent position in society and was very caring towards others. Next page > |
